CAREER SUMMARY

PRE-DEBUT

Giselle was born in South Korea to a Japanese father and a Korean mother. She attended an international school with an American curriculum in Japan, so she can speak Japanese, Korean, and English fluently. Giselle has said she feels the most comfortable with English and has used Korean mostly with her mother pre-debut.

She was of both Korean and Japanese nationality until she turned 22. Afterward, she chose the Japanese nationality as Japan does not allow one to possess dual nationalities.

Giselle sang "Cherry Bomb" by NCT 127 in the infamous “Saturday Open Auditions” of SM Entertainment and got accepted as a trainee. After graduating high school in Japan, she has come to Korea specifically for the purpose of getting into SM Entertainment and becoming a K-Pop idol, and has auditioned 4 times for SM Entertainment alone.

Giselle was a trainee for 11 months in SM Entertainment from the age of 19, from December 2019. Her time as a trainee before her debut is the shortest among all female artists from SM Entertainment. Her stage name, “Giselle,” was chosen because, as a trainee, she used to wear headbands a lot and had a very “elegant” image.

Giselle’s debut teaser was released on the day of Giselle’s birthday. In the video, she raps in 3 languages - Korean, Japanese, and English.

AFTER DEBUT

In 2020, Giselle debuted as a member of aespa, a 4-member group under SM Entertainment, with Karina, Winter, and Ningning with the Digital Single Black Mamba. From her debut, she was recognized for her rap skills and long legs. Her unique stage presence, often dubbed “Giselle-ness” (지젤력), relaxed and smooth, has also gained a sizable fandom.

Giselle has participated in the 2021 Winter SMTOWN track “Zoo” in collaboration with NCT Members (Taeyong, Jeno, Hendery, and Yangyang) as the only female member. Her performance has received praise for her rap parts and stage presence.

As she’s an English-speaking member of aespa, she also has a “high-teen” or “American teenager/hot girl” image among South Korean fans. Her friendship with another K-Pop idol soloist with a similar image, Jeon Somi, has led to many Koreans becoming fans of their natural friendship and English-speaking abilities.

VOCAL

Giselle is commonly thought to be the sub-vocal (not an official position) of aespa. With her distinct vocal tone, Giselle’s singing parts often sound clear and easily recognizable.

Despite not being part of the vocal line, she has had some ad-lib parts in tracks like "Savage."

She has been named as one of the most stable members in live performances.

RAP

Giselle is commonly thought to be the main rapper (not an official position) of aespa. With Karina, she is part of the “rapper line” in aespa. She is thought to be one of the top female rappers in the 4th gen of K-Pop.

Giselle’s rap parts in aespa title tracks often end up becoming the “killing parts” of the song. “Naevis calling, ae” from "Next Level" and “10 of 10 Honestly” in "Spicy" are such examples.

She has written the 3-language rap verse herself for her debut teaser and her verse in "ZOO."

DANCE

Giselle makes use of her long legs and arms, as well as stable core strength, when dancing. The Japanese fans gave her the nickname “Ashinaga Aeri” or “Aeri with Long Legs.”

As her time as a trainee was so short (11 months), she said herself that it takes her longer to master a choreography than other members. However, after the release of "Spicy" and "Drama," Giselle’s dance skills have been generally regarded as much improved and not much lagging behind other members.
