CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Mingi first started dreaming of becoming a singer after listening to music from Kim Jong Kook; even though he is currently the main rapper of ATEEZ, he had initially wanted to debut as a ballad singer.
Mingi attended the same dance academy with Yunho, where they became friends prior to debut. In 2015, Mingi made an appearance as an extra on the music video for miss A’s “Only You” with Yunho. He was a trainee in Maroo Corp. for about a year before he left.
In March of 2016, Mingi became a trainee of KQ Entertainment, only about a month after Yunho joined KQ Entertainment.
In 2017, Mingi participated as one of the contestants on the survival audition program produced by YG Entertainment, MIX NINE. He was eliminated on the first round of eliminations (episode 7).
Mingi was a trainee for three years and seven months before debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2018, Mingi debuted as a member of ATEEZ, an 8-member group under KQ Entertainment, with Seonghwa, Hongjoong, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Wooyoung, and Jongho. Upon debut, he received attention for his rapping and dancing skills.
Along with Hongjoong, Mingi writes most of the rap verses on ATEEZ title and b-side tracks.
Mingi was absent from ATEEZ activities for 8 months (from November 2020 to July 2021) to take a break and treat his anxiety issues.
In 2023, Mingi released his self-produced solo track “Untitled” on the official ATEEZ YouTube channel.
POSITIONS
RAP
Mingi is one of the two main rappers of ATEEZ, along with Hongjoong. He is known for a powerful and raspier tone in a lower pitch, which complements Hongjoong’s higher and nasally tones. Mingi also writes most of his own raps on ATEEZ tracks.
VOCAL
Mingi has a low vocal tone, similar to his rapping voice. Even though Mingi mostly gets the rap verses on ATEEZ title tracks, his vocal tones could be heard in his cover songs or collaboration tracks with other members. Mingi had many “singing rap” verses in the b-side tracks of the 2nd mini album, TREASURE EP.2 : Zero to One. His vocals are well-suited for moodier, sentimental R&B tracks in mid- or slow tempo.
DANCE
Mingi is one of the four main dancers of ATEEZ. He first started his dance training in the genre of old-school hip-hop before becoming a trainee. Mingi is praised for his fluid, groovy style of dancing and power control, often excelling in “waves” (body rolls).
