CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Jay was born in Seattle, Washington and lived there until he was 9 years old, when he moved to Korea with his parents. He speaks both Korean and English fluently, and has both US and Korean citizenships. Though his first language was initially English, he feels more comfortable speaking in Korean in the present.
Jay had been cast by a casting manager by an unspecified company (allegedly SM Entertainment) on the street, and had become a trainee there. He left the company due to personal reasons. He trained on his own for a couple of months and auditioned to become a trainee in Bighit Entertainment in 2017. In 2020, around 3 months before I-LAND began airing, Jay moved to BELIFT LAB, a joint venture by CJ ENM and Bighit Entertainment at the time.
In June 2020, Jay was one of the 24 trainees to appear on the survival audition program I-LAND, co-produced by CJ E&M and HYBE. At the time, he was the trainee with the longest training period on the show. He became one of the 7 finalists to debut as ENHYPEN, coming in second place by earning more than 1.1 million votes.
Jay trained for two years and eleven months in Bighit Entertainment before his debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2020, Jay debuted as a member of ENHYPEN, a 7-member group under BELIFT LAB, with Jungwon, Heeseung, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki.
In 2022, Jay released “ZERO MOMENT”, an OST for the K-Drama Summer Strike with Heeseung and Jake.
In 2023 Jay was credited for lyric writing on “Sweet Venom.”
In 2024, Jay released a collaboration track “whodunit” with the J-rock band GLAY.
POSITIONS
VOCAL
Jay has shown his diverse vocal abilities from low tones to high falsetto. In particular, his mellow vocal tone has been praised in the fandom which shows through in mid- to low- range ballads. Jay has been constantly improving in his vocal stability since debut and is taking over more chorus parts for b-side tracks in recent ENHYPEN releases. He is also one of the members that tend to take over the rap verses.
DANCE
Jay is skilled at the genre of hip-hop/street-style dancing. His dancing style is said to have “more bass” and is on the more powerful side among the ENHYPEN members, shining through especially in choreographies where big, rhythmic movements take center stage. His popping skills have also been praised.
