CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
In 2013, Chaeryeong was a contestant on the survival audition program KPOPSTAR 3 as a duo with her older sister Chaeyeon. Chaeryeong was 13 years old at the time. To prepare for the show, The two of them had enrolled in a dance academy with their mother’s support. Chaeryeong and Chaeyeon made it to the battle audition rematch, but did not make it to the top 10. However, JYP was on the judge panel and Chaeryeong became a trainee of JYP Entertainment with her sister.
In 2015, Chaeryeong and Chaeyeon appeared on the survival audition program SIXTEEN, co-produced by Mnet and JYP Entertainment, to select members that would debut in the JYP girl group TWICE. Neither Chaeryeong nor Chaeyeon made it to the final debut team on SIXTEEN; Chaeryeong stayed as a trainee of JYP Entertainment, while Chaeyeon left the agency, entered PRODUCE 48 and debuted as IZ*ONE in 2018.
Chaeryeong was a trainee of approximately six years before her debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2019, Chaeryeong debuted as a member of ITZY, a 5-member group under JYP Entertainment, with Yeji, Lia, Ryujin and Yuna with “Dalla Dalla.” Chaeryeong, along with her sister, had already had exposure to the general public through her pre-debut ventures on KPOP STAR3 and SIXTEEN. Upon debut, Chaeryeong received attention for being a skilled all-rounder, for her stable live vocals and dancing skills.
When Chaeryeong finally debuted, six months after her sister, many K-Pop fans were supportive of the sisters who had worked to debut in the industry for her long time. The two sisters were both main dancers of the group that they debuted in, and they both received high praise for being the best dancers of their generation. In 2020, the two sisters had a special stage together on the 2020 KBS Song Festival.
In 2021, Chaeryeong appeared as one of the panels for MMTG’s K-Pop Renaissance, where she showed her love for K-Pop as a genre, especially for the girl groups, by discussing which 2nd generation K-Pop hits should be brought back for a concert. In the same year, she appeared on Studio Choom’s “Artist of the Month,” covering “Cry for Me” by Camila Cabello.
In January 2024, Chaeryeong released a solo track “Mine” as one of the b-side tracks on the eighth mini-album BORN TO BE, for which she participated in the composition/lyric writing.
POSITIONS
VOCAL
Though Chaeryeong is most known for being a skilled dancer, her vocals have always received high praise as well. Chaeryeong has a delicate, girlish tone that shines in the higher register, providing contrast to the other huskier vocals of ITZY such as Lia, Yeji, and Ryujin. Chaeryeong is also said to be one of the most stable members during live performances. Her high notes shine clearly in both falsetto and belting techniques.
DANCE
Chaeryeong is thought of as one of the best dancers of 4th-gen K-Pop girl groups. She is one of the two main dancers of ITZY, along with Yeji, and part of the dance line with Yeji and Ryujin. Chaeryeong is known for having fluid, flexible and nimble style of dancing; her dance style has been called “feather-like” for making the powerful movements seem effortless. In 2021, Ali Lee, a professional dancer that trained other JYP trainees and Chaeryeong for over six years at the time, said that “If you dream of becoming a JYP girl group member, Chaeryeong’s dance would be the best training manual.”
