CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Lia was born in Bucheon, South Korea. She spent about three years in Canada in total, moving between Korea and Canada. Lia is fluent in English, with her first language being Korean. When she was in elementary school, she made it through the global auditions of SM Entertainment; however, due to her parents being against it, she did not become an official trainee of SM Entertainment.
In 8th grade (second year of middle school) Lia moved to Jeju island and attended North London Collegiate School Jeju, an international school with a British curriculum, and attended NLCS until 10th grade. Lia auditioned at the JYP Center in Seoul and became an official trainee of JYP Entertainment when she was in 9th grade.
Unlike the other members of ITZY, Lia did not have any pre-debut media exposure. She was a trainee for 4 years before debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2019, Lia debuted as a member and main vocal of ITZY, a 5-member group under JYP Entertainment, with Yeji, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna with “Dalla Dalla.” Upon debut, she received attention for her visuals and soulful voice.
Lia was one of the official MC’s for the Gaon Chart Music Awards for two years in a row (2019 and 2020).
In January 2022, Lia released her first K-Drama OST “Always be your star” for the historical drama The Red Sleeve. In December of 2022, Lia released her second OST, “Blue Flower” for Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow, which received positive reviews.
In 2023, Lia participated as a contestant on King of Masked Singer and was the runner-up of her episode (second in place).
In the September of 2023, Lia announced an indefinite hiatus from her group and solo activities due to health reasons.
POSITIONS
VOCAL
Lia is the main vocal of ITZY. Lia’s vocals first started receiving praise after her cover of Jessie J - “Price Tag” on Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook went viral in 2020. Her distinctive vocal tones are said to shine the most in the mid- to low- register, where she is most stable, and well-suited for pop/R&B mid-tempo songs in English. Though most of the high notes on ITZY’s title tracks go to the members with a higher-pitched voice, Lia has also had high notes in songs such as “ICY.”
Though Lia is not a part of the rap line, she has had some rap verses on ITZY’s b-side tracks such as “Sorry Not Sorry.”
DANCE
In comparison to the other members of the group, Lia has a softer and more fluid style of dancing. Lia had been criticized by the public as being “the weakest dancer” of ITZY, as she was in “a group of main dancers” and the average dancing skill required to execute ITZY’s choreography was quite advanced. However, over time, the public opinion warmed up to Lia’s overall performance as they saw her hard work and improvement.
Lia’s facial expression on stage has been received with praise, in particular how she could quickly switch between her two “modes” - from cold and chic to warm and smiling.
