CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
In 2015, Ryujin was cast by JYP Entertainment when she was waiting in line at a GOT7 fanmeet. Following her casting, Ryujin went to audition at JYP Entertainment. She danced to “Bad Girl” by Ladies’ Code and sang “A Foreigner’s Confession” by AKMU at the audition, and became a trainee of JYP Entertainment.
In 2017, Ryujin played a small role in the crime/noir movie The King. She also made an appearance in the survival audition program Stray Kids. In August, Ryujin appeared in the music video for BTS - “LOVE YOURSELF,” dancing in pair with J-Hope.
From October 2017 to January 2018, Ryujin was a contestant in the survival audition program MIX NINE, co-produced by JTBC and YG Entertainment. Ryujin never lost the number 1 rank among the contestants throughout the showand became known as “the ace of JYP Entertainment” before her debut.
Ryujin was a trainee for about 5 years before her debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2019, Ryujin debuted as the main rapper of ITZY, a 5-member group under JYP Entertainment, with Yeji, Lia, Chaeryeong, and Yuna with “Dalla Dalla.” Ryujin had had exposure to the general public through her pre-debut appearances on Mix Nine, and had already built up a sizable fandom of her own before debut. Upon debut, her superior dance skills and visual, with her “cool girl” aura on stage received praise. Ryujin’s visuals also received attention for the resemblance to the actress Han So Hee.
In 2020, during the promotions for “Wannabe,” Ryujin’s execution of the iconic “shoulder dance” at the start of the song went viral.
In 2021, Ryujin’s “Artist of the Month” video on the Studio Choom YouTube channel, covering “Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish was the quickest “Artist of the Month” video to hit 10 million views. the “MIX&MAX” video with Yeji, covering “Break My Heart Myself” has over 60 million views.
In January 2024, Ryujin released a solo track “Run Away” as one of the b-side tracks on the eighth mini-album BORN TO BE.
POSITIONS
VOCAL
Ryujin focuses more on rap on ITZY’s title tracks; her vocals could mostly be found in the b-side tracks. Much like her tone when rapping, her tone shines the best in the lower register. She also sings a lot of backing vocals in lower notes for harmonization on the other members’ vocal parts. In “In the morning,” Ryujin had the most parts.
RAP
As the main rapper of the group, Ryujin mostly takes over the rap parts in ITZY title tracks. Her deep, powerful voice often makes the “killing part” of ITZY title tracks such as “ICY,” “Wannabe,” “In the morning,” and “BORN TO BE.” Her verses also often start ITZY tracks, capturing attention with her distinctive tone.
DANCE
Ryujin is thought of as one of the best dancers of 4th-gen K-Pop girl groups. She is on the unofficial “dance line” of ITZY with Yeji and Chaeryeong. Ryujin’s superb power control and dynamic facial expressions have often made her fancams go viral. Ryujin is widely regarded as the “center” of ITZY (not an official position) by the members and the fandom, for her stage presence as well as her dance abilities.
