CAREER SUMMARY

PRE-DEBUT

Changbin liked to dance from a young age. When he was in the 5th grade, Changbin performed in front of others for the first time at a school talent show with B1A4’s “O.K.” The good reception he received from his peers has led him to enroll in an audition academy. He chose the vocal track at first, but his instructor, after listening to his voice, suggested he go onto the rap track instead. Changbin was also the captain of the dance club at his high school.

In 2016, prior to becoming a trainee at JYP Entertainment, Changbin entered Mnet’s hip-hop survival program Show Me the Money 5.

Changbin auditioned for JYP Entertainment through his academy, with a rap verse and track that he had produced himself. After becoming a trainee of JYP Entertainment, he became part of the hip-hop producing sub-unit 3RACHA with Bang Chan and Han, writing and producing their own music and putting the songs online.

Changbin was selected as one of the debut team and participated in the survival audition program Stray Kids. He was a trainee for about two years before debut.

AFTER DEBUT

In 2018, Changbin debuted as a member of Stray Kids, an 8-member group under JYP Entertainment, with Bang Chan, Lee Know, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N with “District 9.” Changbin has received praise for his superior rap skills in live performances.

Changbin, as part of the producing sub-unit 3RACHA, participates in the production of almost all of the Stray Kids tracks. Changbin has 154 songs listed on the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), the 11th-highest number out of all idols on the list.

Changbin is also well-known for being the “meme creator” of Stray Kids. The meme of being a “jutdaejwa” (one-track mind / someone who lives by his conviction no matter what others say) went viral in Korea, and Changbin even filmed ads for Samsung Galaxy smartphones with the meme. Changbin also participated in the campaign songs for GALAXY FLIP5 and GALAXY S24, “Fly High” and “8th Grader (Respect Your Dreams) respectively, under the concept of “jutdae.”

In 2023, Changbin sang the chorus of of NewJeans’ “OMG” with a mondegreen lyrics of “Umma Umma ga” (My mother, my mother) in response to the question, “Where did you get your pretty looks from?” The meme since then went viral in Korea, being parodied by many idols, celebrities and even NewJeans themselves.

POSITIONS

VOCAL

Even though Changbin mostly takes the rap part of Stray Kids tracks as part of the rap line, Changbin has been praised for his singing abilities. His vocal tones are much higher and softer than his tone when rapping, and he has hit high notes for songs such as “Hellevator,” “Insomnia,” “Haven” and more. Changbin has appeared on an episode of the South Korean singing competition show, King of Maked Singer, where he showed both his singing and rapping skills.

RAP

Changbin is one of the two main rappers of Stray Kids with Han. His rap skills are recognized as being one of the best of 4th-gen idol groups.

He has clear diction and a powerful voice that shines best in mid- to low- ranges. Changbin’s rap is characterizd by the “scratchy” sounds that he utilizes throughout his verses, and the intentional offbeat rapping.

DANCE

Changbin had been dancing from young age; he had performed at almost all school festivals and been a captain of his high school’s dance club.

Changbin has a powerful and flexible style of dancing, putting emphasis and control into the details of the choreography.
