WORDPLAY IN TITLES
- As a self-produced K-Pop group, Stray Kids is known for including wordplay in album titles or song titles, often mixing Korean, Chinese characters, and English.
- Below are some of the wordplay in Stray Kids’ album/song titles, explained:
God’s Menu
- The song in Korean is written as “神메뉴,” and pronounced “shin-menu.”
- In Korean, “shin (新) menu” means “new menu” that a restaurant might roll out; however, the Chinese character used in the title of the song, 神, means “spirit” or “God.”
- Another Chinese character pronounced as “shin” in Korean is 辛, meaning “spicy.”
- Thus, the title could mean “new menu,” “God’s menu,” and “spicy menu.”
GO生 / IN生
- GO生 is the title of Stray Kids’ first full album; IN生 is the title of the repackage version of the same album.
- The chinese character 生 means “life” or “live,” and is pronounced as “saeng” in Korean.
- “Gosaeng” in Korean means “tribulation” or “hardship,” while “GO LIVE” means “go out there and live your life, despite the hardships.”
- “Insaeng” in Korean means “a person’s life” or “lifetime,” while “IN LIFE,” in conjunction with the previous album title, spells out “GO LIVE IN LIFE.”
Rockstar (樂-STAR)
- The Chinese character 樂, is pronounced as “rock/lak” in Korean and means “music/melody” or “entertainment/pleasure.”
CASE 143
- The “143” stands for the number of letters in the sentence, “I love you.”
- The lyrics of case 143 includes “8 letters is all it takes,” again referring to “I love you.”
